The Spiritual Foundation of Imaging

by Rev J.D. Bloom

Why does imaging work? Is it just some mind-over-matter trick, or is there a firm spiritual basis to this technique?

The concept of "imaging" is actually found in the Bible as one of the primary tools for creation. The first chapter of Genesis states: "Then God said, 'Let us make humankind in our image, according to our likeness…So God created humankind in his image, in the image of God he created them…" Genesis 1:26-27 (NRSV).

The definition of "image" is "a reproduction of the form of someone or something…an exact duplication…" (American Heritage Dictionary). If you are made in God's image, and an image is an exact duplicate, then as God's own image you must possess within you the very same spiritual qualities of God! If God created you through imaging, you must have the innate ability to create your own world of experience through imaging as well.

So how do you create your world? As a powerful spiritual being made in the image and likeness of God, you are constantly creating with your thoughts and feelings. Because an image creates an exact duplicate, you must use your thoughts and feelings to image exactly what you desire. The clarity with which you image determines the results you see in your life. Your task as a conscious co-creator is to harness that innate ability to image and create the life you desire!

The creation story in Genesis actually describes the process by which God's image of the world was conceived and made manifest. The seven days of creation is a practical spiritual road map you can use for imaging – beginning with the first day of creation when you get that initial spark of a new idea ("let there be light"), and then building and developing that idea day by day, step by step, until you breathe enough life into the image for it to actually manifest. If it worked for God, it will work for you!
